The Department of Biomedicine has a longstanding collaboration with the Cheeloo College of Medicine at Shandong University in China, and this summer the two institutions for higher education organized a joint summer school.
Ten students from the Master's program in Biomedicine were selected to join a two-week academic and cultural adventure journey. Together with 20 students from the host university, they participated in exciting lectures given by leading researchers, and tested the newest drug design software.
The course program included a visit to the laboratories, a guided tour up the Thousand Buddah Mountain and around the Xingguochan Temple, a visit of Jinan University City and to a Center for Chinese Cultural Experiences. Here students were given the opportunity to try traditional Chinese attire and to print “the old way". They also joined a day trip to Qufu, the birthplace of the philosopher Confucius. In addition to the planned activities, there was also a lot of leisure time that was used, among other things, to get to know the Chinese participants, explore the city, shop, test out exciting food and go to a karaoke bar. The host students were very eager to showcase their local favorites, thus giving the Norwegian participants an authentic experience of China.
The plan is to continue the collaboration between UiB and Shandong University with a winter school organized in Bergen in the spring of 2020.
