Research interests: My main research topic is reading and writing skills among adults. My PhD. thesis was a study of prisoners' reading and writing skills and how such skills and their accompanying efficacy beliefs could have an effect on participation in education. Main interests within prison research have been to validate instruments for screening prisoners' reading and writing skills by using self-reports scales and by using objective tests. Moreover, I have been analyzing factors that predict participation in education while incarcerated. Within the prison research, I am currently focusing on female prisoners and their educational background and learning difficulties compared to the male prisoners. The prison research data mainly involves large survey data on representative samples of the prison population in Norway.
The project “Reading and writing skills among students in higher education” is an ongoing project which started in 2015. The main aim of the project is to collect new norm data on a test battery (developed by Strømsø et al. 1997) developed for screening students' reading and writing skills. Furthermore, the project aims to validate a Norwegian translation of the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS).
Moreover, I have an interest in the research field of evaluating ICT in school; pupils' and teachers' ICT competence and how ICT is implemented in upper secondary school in Norway.
