Recognition of periods of study abroad at the Faculty of Psychology

Before leaving, you need to apply for academic preliminary approval and when you return you need to apply for final recognition/specific recognition of your student exchange period. You are responsible for presenting adequate documentation both in respect of the application for preliminary approval and in respect of the specific recognition of your student exchange when returning. A link to the electronic form can be found in the fact box on the right on this page.

Preliminary approval

Together with the application for preliminary approval, we also need course descriptions and details of the number of credits for each course you will be taking abroad.

When you apply for preliminary approval, the Faculty will consider whether the modules you are planning to take abroad can be recognised as part of your degree or not. In order to be eligible for support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, it is a prerequisite that the sub-study abroad has been preliminarily approved by the Faculty.

Deadlines

The final application deadline for student exchanges during the autumn semester is 1 May and for student exchanges during the spring semester, the final deadline is 1 November. Nevertheless, we recommend applying for preliminary approval as early as possible during the semester before you are due to travel, as the consideration time is generally shorter during the rest of the semester than just around the deadlines.

Final recognition/specific recognition of student exchanges

If you have attended and passed the courses you received preliminary approval for before travelling, you do not need to enclose anything other than the original transcript from the host university. The transcript must show how many credits/units each course gives, as well as the name of the course and the result/grade.

NOTE: If you have taken courses other than those you received preliminary approval for, you also need to include course descriptions for the new courses in addition to the transcript.

When submitting your application for final recognition, you must enclose the original  transcript. The Faculty accepts transcripts in the following formats:

  • Original paper version of the transcript submitted to the Information Centre at the Faculty of Psychology or submitted via e-mail to the International Coordinator.
  • Verified copy of the original transcript taken by the Information Centre at the Faculty of Psychology.
  • Scanned version of the transcript sent directly from the host university to the University of Bergen or the Faculty of Psychology (you will then receive an e-mail from us stating that we have received the transcript).

If you have attended a student exchange as part of one of the University of Bergen’s bilateral agreements (i.e. not one of the agreements at the Faculty of Psychology) and the University of Bergen Coordinator has notified you that the transcript has been received by the University of Bergen, then the transcript will be registered in our system. In this case, you will not need to submit the transcript together with the application for final recognition, but we ask that you include a comment on the application form stating that you have been informed by the University of Bergen Coordinator that the transcript has been received by the University.

What happens to the application?

When we have made a decision about your case, you will receive a written response to the application for specific recognition via your digital mailbox. Approved results will be registered in StudentWeb as elective courses for your degree. The outcome of the specific recognition will also be reported to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund for any conversion of student loans to grants.
