Sex and politics in a global perspective: Two-day gathering & conference

The conference concludes the combined seminar series, PhD and master course organised by SKOK, LawTransform and SkeivForsk.

In spring 2025, SKOK, LawTransform and Skeivforsk have organized a cross-disciplinary combined seminar series, PhD and master course about the dynamics between sex and politics in a global perspective. Read more about the course here.

To conclude the seminar series and course, we invite both course participants and other interested parties to a two-day gathering and conference on 22 and 23 May, with presentations and a film screening.

It's possible to join the conference without registering, but if you plan on joining for lunch, please register here. The deadline is 16 May at noon.

10:30 – 11:30: Svati P. Shah (University of Massachusetts, Amherst and guest researcher at UiB): Decolonial and anticolonial queer and transgender studies

13:00 – 14:00: Elisabeth Lund Engebretsen (University of Stavanger): Anti-LGBTQ+ mobilizations through global East and Nordic lenses

10:30 – 11:30: Phoebe Kisubi Mbasalaki (University of Essex): Cultural co-productions: Embodied queer and trans knowledges and collaboration

12:30 – 14:00: Film screening: Waves (documentary) by Phoebe Kisubi Mbasalaki:

Trans (and queer) organising in both Mozambique and Brazil takes on various shapes, with NGOs such as TRANSformar.moz in Maputo and Grupo Conexão G in Rio de Janeiro working tirelessly towards countering discrimination, violence and injustices queer and trans people face in these countries.   

Phoebe Kisubi Mbasalaki (University of Essex - Producer) in partnership with TRANSformar.moz in Maputo, Grupo Conexão G in Rio de Janeiro, filmmaker Kurt Orderson (Director) and partners at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, as well as NIREMA at PUC, present a documentary film on trans (and queer) exiles by exploring counter narratives to exclusionary regimes (trans)national solidarities, community, kinship and allyship.
