How to use eBooks

How to find and use eBooks in the University Library's collection.

Main content

eBooks are a major part of the University Library's book collection. As a student or employee at UiB or Helse Bergen you have access to more than 400 000 eBooks, whenever and wherever.

You can find eBooks that the University Library subscribes to by searching in Oria. To search specifically for eBooks, limit the results by setting the filter for Resource type on the right-hand side to E-books.

For a short introduction to eBooks, you can read the University Library's brochure on how to use eBooks (PDF to print).

Frequent questions and answers about eBooks

How to gain access from home

UiB students and employees must connect to the UiB network via VPN when accessing electronic resources off campus / from home. Here is a link to a guide on how to connect to VPN (the link takes you to UiBhjelp, where you need to log in).

I am trying to read the book, but it is being used
If you are told that the book is being used, try again later. Often the book will be available after a short period of time, in some cases another user will have downloaded the book, and it will be withheld from other users for a period of two weeks.

I have used the book before, but now it's gone
Many of the eBooks that the University Library has access to are rented in packages, wherein the books are exchanged. Using this form you can contact the library to suggest the purchase of a book.

I want to borrow a book from another library
Unfortunately, it is not possible to borrow eBooks from another library. It is, however often possible to receive a chapter or some chosen pages from a book. You can, however, order a hard copy or suggest that the University library purchase the book.

Different eBook suppliers have different user interfaces. They also have different rules and procedures for downloading and printing.

How can I use eBooks and other digital resources in my teaching?

The rights concerning teaching varies between publishers. However, it is always possible to link to the resources, as the access control will be done at the publishers’ webpages and only approved IP-addresses will get access. There is also information about user rights and uploading in Mitt UiB (in Norwegian).

Open Access literature can be found in ex. DOAJ for articles and DOAB for books.
