Norwegian ID number
The Norwegian ID number is an 11 digit personal identifier, issued by the Tax Administration office (Skatteetaten). The number will be issued to foreign nationals staying in Norway for at least six months.
Students from countries outside the EU/EEA area, will be registered at the Tax Administration office after meeting at the local police authorities to order the residence card.
- The police will notify the Tax Administration office that you need a national ID number.
- Approximately 2 weeks after registration at the police, you will receive a letter from the Tax Administration office with your national ID number.
It is very important that you register your correct and complete address when applying for the residence card.
You must notify the police if you have changed your address, so that the correct address is registered in the Tax Administration office.

EU/EEA/EFTA students staying in Norway for more than six months must apply for a Norwegian ID number after obtaining the registration certificate from the local police authorities.
In order to apply for the Norwegian ID number, you must book an appointment in advance at the Tax Administration office.
